The Tribal Climate Workshop
Date
The Tribal Climate Workshop was a wonderful success, bringing together over 50 participants from approximately 15 tribal nations, along with representatives from tribal organizations, federal partners, and community members. This diverse gathering allowed tribal experts and community members to share invaluable insights on climate resilience and sustainability. Key highlights included discussions on buffalo reintroduction, land management, water resources, and the intersection of human health and food sovereignty. A compelling panel featuring elders and youth fostered intergenerational dialogue and cultural exchange.
Participants explored funding opportunities and adaptation planning, emphasizing the importance of integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and cultural practices into climate action plans. Strategies for implementing projects that bolster tribal sustainability were shared, alongside an engaging electric vehicle ride-and-drive event that showcased innovative transportation solutions.
The workshop also included a memorable field trip to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) greenhouse, where attendees viewed baby trees and plants essential for restoration efforts. A delicious lunch featuring bison stew and salmon celebrated traditional food sources, and the day culminated in a visit to the CSKT Bison Range, highlighting bison conservation and its cultural significance. Overall, the workshop was a vital step in advancing tribal-led climate initiatives and strengthening community connections.
A big thank you to the sponsors of the event: Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes, Great Plains Tribal Water Alliance, Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals, USGS & BIA.
