Jeff Martin is an Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Bison Specialist in the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University and is located at the West River Research and Extension in Rapid City, SD. He is a conservation paleobiologist and wildlife biologist, and his research lab studies bison adaptability, plasticity, and management in a changing world. The lab applies multiple disciplines including, but not limited to wildlife biology, climatology, thermography, disease ecology, natural history, and human dimensions of climate change for predicting bison responses to climate change. Because bison are a species considered both a wildlife and livestock taxa, the researchers transect all sectors of bison management: private commercial operations, nonprofit NGOs, tribal herds, and public agency herds, collectively referred to as the Bison Management System (BMS). This multifaceted approach to bison management provides a unique opportunities and access to assess diverse management strategies for improving management of this iconic species. This resulting research framework places bison at the nexus of two emerging paradigms: changing climate and changing cultural values across working lands (i.e., production) and natural lands (i.e., conservation). Being at a Land Grant University, the lab strive to make research widely applicable to land and bison managers across all sectors. Martin grew up on a small bison ranch in west-central Wisconsin, worked on a large bison ranch in western South Dakota during his undergrad, and earned his Ph.D. in Wildlife Sciences from Texas A&M University in 2020.
